Since September, I have been an intern at Nuffer, Smith, Tucker while I finish my final semester at San Diego State University. Prior to NST, I gained experience in public relations while interning for nonprofit organizations within San Diego County. The experience I’ve received at NST has provided me with an amazing education focused on strategies that assist organizations in reaching their goals. Since this is my first experience at a public relations agency, I must say, I was pretty nervous. NST is one of those agencies that you look up to and think, “one day I’ll make it there.” But the people here made it easy to shed that apprehension and quickly made me feel like a part of the team.
Three months later, I have assisted different account teams with projects for more than 10 of our clients. Throughout the whole process, I’ve received unparalleled guidance and assistance from each team member. This support not only educated me on the framework of public relations, but also gave my work meaning by explaining how my efforts were integral to the entire strategic plan. The team at NST taught me that whether it is research, drafting and editing, or media outreach, there is always a strategy in public relations, with the inclusive purpose of achieving our clients’ overall goals. From this, I’ve gained an appreciation for a to-do list. Agency life in public relations requires the ability to multitask and plan, as well as an obligation to efficiency, which I accepted whole-heartedly.
One highlight of my experience was the opportunity to attend the Edward L. Bernays Mark of Excellence Awards with the team. NST is one of the most notable PR teams in San Diego, so it came to no surprise how well the company did at the event – coming home with 12 awards. The team’s humble approach to accepting each award made me proud to be a part of this agency and displayed the incredible character of each PR professional here.
The major takeaway I’ve gained while being at Nuffer, Smith, Tucker, is the fact that we are all humans and highlighting the aspect of individualism is not only a perk, but also an essential aspect of public relations planning. These targeted campaigns composed by the team here supports that fact and are displayed through their tactical approach to strategic planning for each client. As graduation nears, I am so appreciative of the education I have gained while at this agency and am indebted to the team at NST for facilitating such a wonderful experience.
