Bill Trumpfheller Recognized for an Exemplary Career in Public Relations
For his leadership and innovation in a career spanning two decades, Bill Trumpfheller, president of Nuffer, Smith, Tucker Inc., received the Otto Bos Lifetime Achievement Award at last night’s Edward L. Bernays Mark of Excellence Awards.
The Bernays Awards, presented by the San Diego chapter of the Public Relations Society of America, recognizes the industry’s finest public-relations campaigns and professionals. Trumpfheller was presented the award by Donna Alm, vice president of marketing and communications for Centre City Development Corp.
Nuffer, Smith, Tucker’s Kerry Tucker and Dave Nuffer are prior recipients of this award in 1998 and 1994, respectively. Nuffer, Smith, Tucker is the only San Diego public relations firm with three Otto Bos Lifetime Achievement Award winners, and Nuffer was the first to receive the award after its namesake was bestowed the honor posthumously in 1992.
“Bill’s expertise in balancing the use of new technologies with traditional communication vehicles to shape behavior has led our clients and our firm to regional and national acclaim,” said Tucker. “His community service, particularly his mentoring of young professionals in our field, make him especially deserving of this honor.”
Known for being on the edge of communications innovation, Trumpfheller became the president of Nuffer, Smith, Tucker five years ago, and he started his career at the firm 22 years ago as an intern. He orchestrated one of the country’s first e-communities for the WD-40 Company, which now has a fan club of 100,000 members involved in ongoing real-time discussions about the use of company products. His account portfolio includes award-winning campaigns for national clients, including McDonald’s, Chicken of the Sea and Sony Electronics.
Trumpfheller has served on the board of directors of many nonprofit organizations, including United Way of San Diego County, Senior Community Centers, Corporate Directors Forum, Ronald McDonald House Charities and the San Diego State University Alumni Association, among others.
The Otto Bos Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes public-relations practitioners who have compiled an exemplary career in the field. The honoree is an individual who continuously sets the highest standards of performance of ethical practice. The award is named after Otto Bos, a former San Diegan who, at the time of his death in 1991, served as director of communications and public affairs in the office of California Gov. Pete Wilson.
