Nuffer, Smith, Tucker is an independent public relations agency offering comprehensive communication and strategic planning services, and in-house graphics, website and interactive capabilities. With a team of 24 and offices in San Diego, California, and Tijuana, Mexico, we are a binational company serving clients on both sides of the border.
Our agency’s first days date back to April 1974 when Dave Nuffer and Bob Smith opened a political campaign firm and special projects division of Phillips-Ramsey, a San Diego-based ad agency. From modest beginnings quickly sprang a full-service public relations and communications agency working with a diverse set of clients throughout California. The Dairy Council of California was our first client and remains a client to this day. Kerry Tucker joined the team in 1981 and still serves as chief strategic counsel for the firm.
From 2000 to December 2016, the agency was led by Bill Trumpfheller – a zealous champion of local nonprofit organizations, universities and businesses. NST’s ties to the San Diego community grew even deeper through Trumpfheller’s tenure at the agency. After his death in December 2016, Teresa Siles was named managing director and serves in that role today.
Over the decades, we have had the pleasure of working with notable brands and high-profile campaigns. In 2016, our ongoing work and the growing need for cross-border communication in the Cali Baja Mega Region led us to launch the region’s first and only binational public relations firm complete with an office in Tijuana, Mexico.
Our Legacy Leaders
Dave Nuffer, fondly remembered as "Mr. Public Relations in San Diego" co-founded Nuffer, Smith, Tucker in 1974. Over five decades in the public relations industry, Nuffer developed a reputation as the go-to man for strategic communications. He served countless nonprofit organizations and community groups, always sharing a smile with those around him. His love for public relations was only rivaled by baseball and mariachi music.
Bob Smith co-founded Nuffer, Smith, Tucker in 1974 after serving as chairman of Phillips-Ramsey. He played a key role through the years as the agency’s source for developments in the field of management and was a pioneer of our strategic planning practice area. In 1980, Smith advocated for NST to establish a Business Advisory Board where community leaders could share advice, cementing the agency’s relationships in the San Diego business community.
Bill Trumpfheller served as president of Nuffer, Smith, Tucker from 2000 to 2016 and helped grow the agency into a modern communications firm skilled in branding, marketing and crisis communications. His vision for greater cross-border collaboration between San Diego and Tijuana led NST to open an agency office in Tijuana — the first San Diego public relations firm to do so. Trumpfheller’s big personality and dedication to bettering the community was felt by employees, clients and business leaders throughout San Diego.
