America’s Cup

Challenge:

The San Diego Yacht Club is the second most winning America’s Cup yacht club in history. The San Diego Yacht Club has won the prestigious America’s Cup, with races dating back to 1851, three times, and Nuffer, Smith, Tucker was there during the 1988 and 1992 races leading the off-the-water publicity charge.

NST was charged with generating awareness for both America’s Cup events among audiences outside the sailing community and broadening the appeal to the general public by managing international outreach and media relations.

Jump forward 19 years to 2011. Based on the agency’s past knowledge and experience with large-scale, high-profile sailing events, the newly formed Sailing Events Association San Diego (SEA SD), created to bring international racing to the region and spur economic revenue, turned to NST for assistance in hosting its first event, the Oracle RC44 Cup San Diego. Through NST’s success in attracting national sailing enthusiasts to San Diego Bay for the regatta and driving hotel room reservations, the most-important objective was achieved: SEA SD showed that San Diego Bay was a prime destination for world-class sailing and secured a stop on the new America’s Cup World Series tour format for November 2011. NST would go on to be intricately involved in the America’s Cup World Series – San Diego event to further add to the agency’s history with the America’s Cup.
